Created by Mr. Colemer When does "History" begin?Module one will focus on the origins of mankind. In the following activities you will learn about the first humans, how they survived, the artifacts they left behind, and the locations we have found archeological evidence about them. Something to pay close attention to is how we "know" what we think we know. How do science and history work together to formulate theories on the origins of our species? The lifestyles led by early people varied by location; how did these locations shape life for our ancestors? What factors contributed to people advancing from nomadic hunter gatherers to advanced societies and empires? Below is a list of instructions and online resources. These resources will help you complete the required activities for this module.
Activities: 1. Click the Atlas of the Human Journey link. View the atlas and video for each time period. Click on each of the locations shown on the atlas to view pictures and artifacts and read the archeological information presented. As you go through each time period write a very brief summary (3-4 sentences) of the video. Be sure to label each summary so I will know which video it belongs with. When you finish save this document as mod1firstname.2. Watch the embedded video below on Flint Knapping. Create a list of 4 or more tools early people could have made with this knowledge and how each tool would have improved their quality of life or their chances of survival. Add this list to your Word Document from Activity 1.3. Watch the embedded video below on the atlatl. It is a little weird, but the information on this device is good. Pay attention to the way the atlatl and dart work together.4. Try to use the atlatl! Mr.Colemer will bring in his atlatl and a suitable target, the class will go outside and each member must try the atlatl at least once. After viewing the video by Professor Wilkins (Atlatl Bob) and trying the atlatl yourself answer the questions in the linked file. When you finish save the file naming it mod1atlatlfirstname.
5. You have seen Atlatl Bob and tried the atlatl first hand. Watch the Youtube clip on Native American bows. Think about the complex process of making a bow, the range and power of the bow, and any other qualities of the bow that occur to you. What were the advantages and disadvantages of each tool and why do you think the atlatl eventually disappeared? Write 200-300 words supporting your position. This text should be added to your Word Document from Activity 1. Label it "Atlatl vs Bow."6. Watch Episode 1 of "Guns, Germs, and Steel." Pay special attention to the focus on agriculture.7. After finishing all of the activities above email your Word documents to Mr. Colemer. mcolemer@amherst.k12.wi.us8. After completing the activities above you should be prepared for the "
